SUMMARY
In the article “Taming Macho Ways,” by Elvia Alvarado, describes the big machismo in the country different that in the city and how it can be tame. In the country, the campesinas make the housework during all day until their husbands get home at night to have dinner and go to sleep since their work had been done. Nevertheless, for the campesinas the work is continuous and they never take a rest. However, the women do most of the work there are kind of hard physical jobs that need being made by the men. On the other hand, in the city the men help out the women with the housework when they are doing something else.
The “machismo” is a big historical problem that makes the campesinos to do not support their families and start beating their wives since the campesinos are drank.
When the campesinos organized most of them drink less, usually stop beating their wives, and they are very dedicated to their work and their families. The same when the campesinas organized they purpose to change.
Elvia Alvarado says “The people can change the bad habits of the past when they want a new society.”
critical questions:
1. is it ok if the men beat their wives? why or why not?
2. do you think the people had changed their point of view about the machista with the pass of the time?
